Our History

The service was established in 1976 as Wednesday Mothers Group – a group of mothers who came together for a coffee morning to socialize with each other and allow the children time to interact with one another.  The mothers were brought together through the Child Welfare District Officer of that time, Mr Archibald Leadbeater.

The service expanded, receiving funding for a ten-hour position for a Co-ordinator.  Groups were held with both group leaders and childcare workers working on a voluntary basis.

The service grew and more funding was received to pay workers a small amount for their work.

In 1980 the service changed its name to Parramatta Family Support.

In 1985 the service received a WSAAS grant for a 30 hour position for a Social Worker/Co-ordinator and after two years, this position became full time and was picked up by DOCS.

In 1987 Parramatta Family Support became Incorporated.  The service worked in two local government areas so the name was changed on 15th September, 1988 to Parramatta/Holroyd Family Support Inc.

The service has grown over the years with many part-time staff.

In 1992, we again received a successful grant from WSAAS for a full time Adolescent Parent Worker and after two years DOCS continued to fund the position.

During all these years, the service has been using outreach educators to facilitate the groups but Parramatta/Holroyd Family Support Inc. provided childcare and transport.

The Centre is a very stable environment with plenty of parking and a very supportive neighbourhood.

Through different one off grants such as Council Community Development Grants, Local Clubs, WSAAS, NRMA etc. we have been able to run one off programs and we could also purchase new equipment for the programs and for the offices, such as computers, printers etc.
